solo trip: the best of your ‘me’ time

Last year, the best book I read was The 5AM Club. I learned many new things from this book and was able to connect more deeply with some of my philosophies and practices. One of the beliefs that deeply resonated with me was the importance of spending “me time.” Your relationship with yourself predicts your relationship with others. To build the best relationship with yourself, you must spend time alone. And what can be a better way than taking a solo trip to somewhere to build the best relationship with yourself?

It is said that “the best thinking is done in solitude; the worst one is done in turmoil.” In 2021, I introduced a new routine into my life. The routine is to take a yearly solo trip every December to my favorite place in Bangladesh. For me, Saint Martin is the place where I find the most peace in solitude. Last December, I made my fourth solo trip in a row. I spend around a week in a beachside resort. The place is very quiet and peaceful, with a soothing wave sound. I try to utilize the full week by doing almost nothing, making fewer connections with familiar faces, and reading books while relaxing in a hammock.

I take 2–3 books with me and try to finish at least two during my stay at Saint Martin. One morning of my solo trip, I named it “Decision Morning”. I take some of my big topics to think there. I review my last year, with all the successes and mistakes, and prepare for the next year by taking some big decisions of my life. The decisions can be where I will take my house on rent, whom to marry, and which company to choose to work for.

I set some targets for next year. Apart from reading books and making decisions, I continue my regular routine, which includes waking up in the morning, completing my physical exercises, and practicing meditation. This week is very important to take a break from work. In the last two years, I have made another practice of covering the full saint martin by running in one morning.

This one week, I call my “mini-retirement week” because I retire from my office tasks in this week and completely rebuild myself in solitude. If you have this luxury, try it. You must love it. And the result you will find soon as well!
